Spiral bevel gears are conical precision gears designed to transmit power, motion and torque between intersecting shafts, typically at 90°. Unlike straight tooth bevel gears, spiral bevel gears use curved, spiral-cut teeth. This geometry increases the contact ratio and delivers smoother, quieter and higher-load right-angle power transfer, ideal when performance and refinement matter. You might also see them referred to as spiral-cut bevel gears.
In motion, two mating spiral bevel gears mesh on intersecting axes. As the driver turns, its spiral teeth design engages the driven gear gradually along the tooth face, allowing for greater surface contact compared to straight tooth variants. This results in lower vibration and noise, improved load distribution and excellent positional repeatability.
A typical example is a compact right-angle gearbox on a high-speed packaging line: spiral bevel gears keep the drive quiet for operator comfort, handle frequent starts/stops without chatter and preserve accuracy at speed. They’re also chosen in robotics joints, machine tools and test rigs where stable, backlash-controlled motion is critical.
Accu's selection of spiral bevel gears is available in various engineering grade materials that fit your duty cycle, environment and maintenance plan:
Our range of precision spiral bevel gears covers variants with 15 to 45 teeth and gear ratios from 1:1.5 to 1:3, allowing you to tailor output speed and torque. Bore diameters span 6mm to 16 mm, suiting standard shafts and assembly distances from 20mm to 75.27 mm, helping you package drives from compact mechanisms through to larger right-angle gearboxes. For best results, select matched pairs to achieve the specified ratio and mesh quality at your chosen assembly distance.
A: Advantages include smooth, quiet running, higher load capacity, strong durability at speed and precise backlash control. Trade-offs are more complex manufacturing and setup, axial thrust that must be supported and generally higher cost than straight-tooth equivalents.
A: Yes. Their rolling contact and gradual engagement mean high mechanical efficiency when correctly aligned and lubricated. They're typically higher efficiency than worm drives and comparable to straight bevels in many applications.
A: Both use curved teeth, but hypoid gears have an offset between the shaft axes, creating more sliding action. This supports very high loads and quiet operation but can reduce efficiency compared with spiral bevels and often calls for specific lubricants. Spiral bevel gears mesh on intersecting axes, with less sliding and typically higher efficiency.
A: Yes. Spiral bevel gears can run clockwise and anticlockwise. Note that the spiral angle produces axial thrust whose direction reverses with rotation, so bearings and housings must be specified to manage thrust in both directions if your application requires it.
A: Straight bevel gears have radial, straight teeth that engage suddenly, ideal for moderate speeds, simple setup and cost-effective right-angle drives. Spiral bevel gears have curved teeth that engage progressively, offering quieter, smoother operation and higher load capacity at speed, with greater setup precision required.
High precision, bespoke manufacture of Spiral Bevel Gears to customer specification. State of the art facilities specialising in both small batch prototyping and large scale manufacture.
